Specially developed telescopic doors for Norwegian cargo ships

Twenty years ago, the Norwegian shipping company Frøy A/S purchased two specially developed telescopic doors for their combi-freighters MS Rotsund and MS Folla. Now they have two brand new doors, identical to the doors they received 20 years ago.
The doors are 6.5 meters wide and 2.6 meters high. To ensure as large an opening as possible within the limitations of a ship, they are designed as telescopic doors so they can be opened by sliding over each other. They are built in high-quality stainless steel and equipped with 150 mm insulation to ensure correct cold room temperatures of around minus 20°.

A door of this size and design weighs almost a ton, and to ensure that it retains its shape and functionality for so many years, the construction is equipped with strategically placed reinforcements. This is a crucial part of the explanation for why the doors have been able to withstand seas, frost, moisture and the heavy truck traffic in the cargo holds for almost two decades.

Now the doors have been replaced. Not because they succumbed to salt water, moisture and frost, but because they have been marked by collisions over time. When we received the order, it was with some pride that we realized that it was a 1:1 redelivery of the same doors we delivered almost 20 years ago - without any changes or adaptations.
That doors of that size last so long in one of the most demanding environments imaginable is a story in itself. And when the customer returns after two decades and wants an identical solution, it's also a story of satisfaction and trust.
At DAN-doors , we have developed many special solutions for ships over the years, including fishing trawlers and other cargo ships, but for us this story is special: it is an example of how a solution developed for a very specific need can prove its worth over decades.
