Safety with carpet drop

April 26, 2024

Viborg Theater has fireproofed their theater hall with a 14 meter long fire curtain

Many of the country's theaters are housed in priceless historic buildings, and implementing modern fire safety measures can be challenging due to limitations of historic architecture, lack of space or aesthetics.

A great responsibility

Buildings with many visitors have a great responsibility when it comes to fire safety.

With the installation of the fire curtain, Viborg Theater can now safely invite the audience to performances, as the 14 meter long and three ton curtain is certified according to the EU's strictest safety standard, EI-2-60. EI-class fire curtains protect against the spread of fire while creating optimal conditions for safe evacuation - in this case for at least one hour.

The first challenge started already upon arrival outside the theater

The fire curtain was delivered in one piece and weighed approximately three tons. Upon arrival at Viborg Theatre, it was clear that extraordinary measures would have to be taken to get it into the theater at all.

The curtain had to be rolled through the theater foyer and into the auditorium. The path to the auditorium was not in a straight line and it had to be maneuvered back and forth with small adjustments to get around and make the right turn. It was also necessary to put reinforcing plates on the floor, which would otherwise not be able to support the heavy weight.

The second challenge was getting the large curtain roll in place

The fire curtain is located under the ceiling at the front of the stage, where it forms an effective safety wall that protects both the theater's audience and its employees in case of fire.

The fire curtain had to be lowered over the floodlights to a position where there was only just enough room for the curtain roll. At the same time, the space around it was very tight, and it was one of those installation tasks that requires an extraordinary effort from the installation team. To succeed, it had to be carefully pryed into place, which is no easy task with a three-ton curtain roll.

Good luck!

At DAN-doors we often boast about our installers who are world champions in making the impossible happen, and this case is no exception. The 14 meter long and three ton heavy EI-2-60 fire curtain was installed under the ceiling at the front of the stage. Viborg Theatre has room for almost 400 spectators, and they can now stage performances safe in the knowledge that their theater meets the requirements of the fire authorities and that the building's users can be evacuated in the event of a fire. We think this is a huge success.
